Basic color terms enter languages in a constrained order
The finding
Cited claimBerlin and Kay (1969) compared color vocabularies across 98 languages and argued that basic color terms appear in a constrained sequence: all languages distinguish dark and light; a third term is red; then green or yellow; then blue; and so on. A separate term for blue tends to arrive late, which is why some languages historically grouped blue with green or black. The strict universality of the sequence is contested, and the collection flags it as foundational but debated rather than settled.
